The Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto (NWRCT), Investing in Women’s Futures Program, assists Indigenous women in building their economic independence through direct service and referrals pertaining to employment/education/training, developing goals, small business support and offering one-on-one supports, group workshops, and culturally relevant programming.

As part of the NWRCT team, the Community Wellness Worker will be responsible for providing client and participant-based services to Aboriginal individuals, families, and children, including family violence services, referrals, support, and case management to clients to address/respond to existing  and  emerging  health,  healing,  and  wellness  issues,  or  violent  situations.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in social work, community wellness, etc., with a minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in community service delivery or the equivalent
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Facilitation skills are an asset.
  • Experience in client advocacy with demonstrated experience providing services to Indigenous women and families.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples and Communities is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and family dynamics is preferred.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of and established relationships with other service providers, ability to network, and create/maintain these relationships.
  • Strong organizational/time management skills with an ability to plan, define measurable objectives and outcomes and meet timelines.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, internet, and general office equipment
  • Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening are required.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Process in-house client intake assessments and determine appropriate referrals.
    • Assist clients in developing action plans to address their health, healing, and wellness concerns.
    • Client-Based Services – Peer support, assisting clients in accessing services related to reducing family violence and improving Aboriginal health, advocacy, crisis intervention, referrals to other services such as addiction centers, shelters, court workers, legal, etc.
    • Participant-based Services – culturally based community and group activities that promote Aboriginal healing and wellness, such as Sisters in Spirit, weekly drum circle, other NWRCT programs, and guest workshops.
    • Outreach Based Services – network with surrounding health and social agencies, organize, facilitate, and attend community and cultural events such as cultural awareness illness prevention.
    • Assist and maintain a master volunteer list for NWRCT for events such as Sisters in Spirit and Solstice
    • Assist and recruit volunteers for NWRCT programs and activities.
    • Take responsibility to increase sensitivity, awareness, and implementation of cultural teachings and organizational practices in a professional manner.
    • Support and work towards the overall aims and objectives of the NWRCT
    • Empower women to articulate their needs and goals and to advocate for themselves.
    • Ability to work as a team and within the organization framework, including staff meetings, professional development opportunities, case management, team building, and self-care.
    • Carry out other duties which may be necessary from time to time as required.
    • Other center duties as requested.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUITES

  • Complete reports monthly, quarterly, and annually (client files, programming statistics, and monthly work) and submit them to the Executive Director on or before the due date.
  • Maintain accurate date client listing, case notes, and client files.
  • Assist with program budget expenditures, coordinate, and prepare necessary paperwork with adequacy and reasonability.
  • Assist with training and mentoring of front-line staff.
  • Assist with other program workshop preparation and monitoring, as required.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and best practices as set by the NWRCT and applicable funder- mandated policies and procedures.
  • Ability to create and maintain a confidential, welcoming, friendly, and safe environment for staff, board members, funders, clients, and guests.

The Community Wellness Worker will be directly accountable to the Program Manager or designate for the proper completion of the functions outlined in the job description.
